Travel

Travel to and from Healy Lake is primarily done by vehicle, boat, and plane. In the summer months, there is no road access to the Village, so travellers must navigate the Tanana and Healy Rivers by boat. In the winter months, the Tribe maintains an ice road that winds across the frozen Tanana River, along the “Winter Trail” (on land), and over the frozen lake. 40-Mile Air operates flights three times per week (about 60 min. each) from Fairbanks year-round.

Community members travel to Fairbanks and Delta to get things they need. The closest city to Healy Lake is Delta Junction, lying roughly 29 miles west of the Village (reference the Alaska Road Map). Healy Lake currently doesn’t operate a store, so Delta is considered its “hub community.” Fairbanks is Interior Alaska’s largest city and all of Alaska’s second-largest city. Fairbanks is about 109 miles (several more road miles) away from Healy Lake.

Inter-village travel is usually done by vehicle, snowmachine, or fourwheeler- depending on the time of year. If the weather is fine, walking is also a good way to get around.
